In vitro digestibility of lucerne hay using bag method

constantin gavan

Abstract

A filter bag method was used for estimating apparent dry matter (DM) digestibility, apparent digestible organic matter in DM, true DM digestibility, true digestible organic matter in DM and Digestibility of neutral detergent fibre. The forage sample analysed comprised tree plant parts (whole, leaf and stem) of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), one degree of particle breakdown (1 mm sieve size at miliing) and two field replicates at Agricultural Research and Developement Station (ARDS) Șimnic-Craiova. Rumen fluid was used from two cannulated dairy cows.

The use of filter bags can give acceptable results for the in vitro digestibility of forages. The escape of soluble matter from bags with samples high in solubles could influence the microbial population and hence increase cell wall degradation in bags with samples low in soluble matter, if  all are in the same incubation vessel.
